Clients in Malaysia Connect at Speeds Equal to London HQ LAN
May 22, 2008 - "Staggering results" was the verdict recorded after the installation of DBAM Exbander Precision at The Female Health Company (UK) plc's new Malaysian plant.
In February 2008 The Female Health Company (UK) plc opened a new production plant in Selangor Malaysia. The brief for Phoenix Consultancy Services Ltd their IT provider was that everything had to be controlled and managed from the UK and that the Malaysian users would be utilising the Syspro ERP system on the London server.
After the PC's were installed the sites were linked using Sonicwall site to site VPN. The broadband package in Malaysia provided a 2mb download speed which was OK but the upstream link provided was a mere 389Kbs. Initial testing showed that the link would be far too slow to be usable for the ERP system and the latency on the link was between 300-400ms. After discussions with several IT firms Phoenix Consultancy decided to install a Terminal Server in London to run the client end of the ERP system and the DBAM EP60 WAN acceleration units at each end of the connection before looking at the more expensive solutions such as those from Expand Networks and Citrix XenApp.
“Results have been staggering” comments Andy Davis of Phoenix Consultancy. “Clients in Malaysia are now getting connection speeds that are as good as on the LAN in London. Printing was a major worry because The Female Health Company print system uses a word document template that is populated with data and then sent down the link. Test reprints of 10 invoices (100kb each document) whilst clients were also browsing stock code information and customer details showed no loss of performance, with documents printing out about 10 seconds after the print job was initiated. For anyone looking for a low cost solution for running applications over high latency WAN links I would thoroughly recommend they try DBAM before looking anywhere else” continued Davis, whilst adding “Many thanks also go to the specialists at Tekdata who could not have been more helpful with the project”.
